I always wondered what the mood was like internally between mega brands during the early 1990s. For years I wondered whether Tommy and Ralph hated each other and whether Calvin and Perry would join the ruck if they were left alone in a room.
On Round Two’s excellent YouTube series, Hilfiger took a visit to see the store’s vintage stash and dropped a (light-hearted?) shot at Polo, “Love it, fantastic. They need a Tommy section though — don’t mix it next to that polio.” I’m not interested in rapper subliminals so much these days, but fashion beefs stay fascinating. The war for the hearts, minds, colourful rugby shirts and preppy gear evidently spawned some gloriously snide nicknames.
Incidentally, while we’re talking vintage clothing, Hiroshi Fujiwara teasing some possible sequel to the Seditionaries book is a future highlight.
