Normally I try not to post videos here unless they’ve got less than a couple of thousand views, but Arc’teryx’s channel is strong and they showcase their secret weapon in this COMMIT – INSPIRED DESIGN profile of industry veteran and sealed-zip OG Mike Blenkarn. I had the pleasure of meeting this gent extremely briefly a few years back, and it was clear by the awe he inspires by some talented designers around him that he’s a genius in his field. As the video blurb mentions, he’s been working with GORE-TEX jackets since disco was big, which means he’s still far, far, far ahead of our ideas of what a waterproof, breathable coat can be. The outdoors industry is a breeding ground for innovators (one of my blog highlights has been the boot god Guillaume Sacre leaving a message) and Blenkarn is up there as part of the elite, with that geniuses’ blend of not giving a shit about convention and really, really, really giving several shits about solving something. If this video makes you want to learn more about Blenkarn’s brilliance, check out this article from LITHOGRAPHICA (Arc’teryx’s own publication) that details this longtime R&D mastermind’s unconventional, hands-on methods of getting the job done. Best of all, this guy has zero interest in fashion or what the cool kids are doing — he’s interested in whether it serves the people using this gear for its intended purpose.
